Putting a New Spin on Tennis

Jul 11, 2019 9:57:50 PM

Today, we visited Mr. Lawlor’s class, “Lab Coat Jerseys: The Science of Sports.” In addition to getting to play tennis in Deerfield’s beautiful, recently-inaugurated Jay & Mimi Morsman Tennis Pavilion, his students learned about how the material a court is made of (red clay, hardcourt, or grass) affects the behavior of the tennis ball after it bounces on the ground.

Hear Mr. Lawlor talk explain the lesson and watch footage from the tennis courts here:

Building on Tuesday’s experiment with basketballs, students discussed how the spin a tennis player puts on the ball changes its trajectory. Professional players can adjust the angle of contact with their racket to manipulate the ball’s behavior when it bounces and outmatch their opponent. The class also learned that Sam F. “used to be so nasty at tennis. Now [he’s] just semi-nasty.”

Hear Mr. Lawlor and Camila C. talk about topspin and backspin here:
