The Experimentory Blog

Our year-round blog describes our program, values, and plans for next year.

The Exp Summer Daily

Our summer news consists of daily updates while we're in session -- giving a window into past years.

We are the Experimentory, 2018

Jun 12, 2018 1:28:25 PM

The Experimentory at Deerfield Academy is more than a catalogue of summer course offerings. It is not just a schedule of field trips and activities. It is not a recreational club with buildings and fields reserved for afternoon activities. In fact, the Experimentory isn't really an "it" at all --it's a "we"-- a community of mentors and students.

It is June. The first day of Exp18 Session 1 is less than a month away. That means it's time to lift the curtain and introduce this year's cast of characters.

Why We're Here: Our Students

We have 98 students enrolled in the Experimentory this year -- 68 during Session 1 and 63 during Session 2. Here are some fun facts and handy stats about Exp18:

    • Our students come from 12 countries: Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
    • Our domestic students come from 11 states: California, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. (Scroll to the bottom of this post for a world map of this year's home towns.)
    • We have seven returning students and four siblings of former Experimentory students.
    • "Maya/Maia" is the winner of the name game -- we have three. We also have two students named Sam, two Sophias, two Joshuas, two Jasmines, and two Ethans.
    • We have three pairs of siblings -- including two sets of twins.
    • The gender balance is around 55/45 -- with more boys than girls in Session 1 and more girls than boys in Session 2.
    • There is a 40-60 split between 7th and 8th graders.
    • We have a lot of common interests, as well as some students with unique passions. These include writing, programming, politics, and Rubiks' Cube; competitive math, spelling bees, speech and debate, and Odyssey of the Mind; soccer, golf, lacrosse, squash, swimming, and basketball; theatre, jazz band, and creating videos; rock climbing, sailing, skiing, and various types of martial arts; riding horseback, orchestra, dance, and origami; playing Dungeons and Dragons, video games, and strategy board games; robotics, needle-felting, trivia, and legos; girl scouts, community service, and Young Round Square.IMG_5053

Why We're Able To Be Here: Our Staff

This year's staff includes four teachers, four teaching fellows, nine proctors, four staff members, and two program nurses. All together, that brings our total number of Experimentors to 121 -- not a bad at all!

There are two ways to get to know these twenty-three individuals. First, there are pictures and short bios of each on the Experimentory People page. Second, we are currently featuring our Exp18 staff in a series of social media posts. Could there be a better time to start following us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter?

How You Can Be Here, Too: Resources for Friends and Family

Alas, it is too late to apply to join us this summer. However, we do all that we can to help our students' friends, family, and fans follow our adventures from home. Here are some options:

  • Subscribe to our summertime blog! The Experimentory Summer Daily is exactly what it sounds like: stories from the day-to-day activities at our Program. We post there once a week in the month of June and then nearly every day while the Experimentory is in session.
  • Subscribe to the MC Squared -- our weekly email newsletter. These are an executive summary of each week with links to some of our favorite recent social media.
  • Follow us on Social Media. In addition to the Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages listed above, be sure to visit our YouTube and Flickr pages for tons of videos and pictures.

The Exp Summer Daily provides news and updates while we are in session in July and August. The rest of the year, check out the Experimentory Blog for posts feature our students, teachers, classes, values, goals, and plans for the coming year.
